Seal Report (cont.)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the invaluable feedback on the ‘less is more’ topic.
It’s very interesting indeed, as most of you seem to be swaying towards the ‘six-track’ concept.

One further point that I forgot to mention was that a six-track album would of course be sold at a relative price thus making music more affordable which I personally support. Also, as some of you have clearly understood, it might help to think of it more in terms of higher quality music more frequently. You could end up with two albums a year…six tracks every six months. Now I’m not promising this of course but what I am saying is that it becomes somewhat easier to be more frequent with ones output whilst focusing on a lesser number of songs.

So you see, you could end up with more new and exciting music over a shorter period of time. It’s no secret that I have a tendency to take my time when it comes to making records.

All in all, I feel that the industry is changing and that artist will have to adjust. My agenda now is the same as it’s always been, to connect emotionally with my fans and provide you with the best that I have to offer.

Please keep posting your comments, as they’re really helpful.

Love, Peace and the family,

S.

Seal Report

Hi Everyone,

Hope you’ve all been well. First, I want to say thank you to everyone for writing in and contributing to this site, you all have such valid and interesting things to say and I wish I could answer each and every question individually but obviously that just wouldn’t be realistic.

The Grammy’s were fun yesterday and Charles made it even more fun to hang out. The great thing about these events is that you get to see your peers and friends that you only see at these kind of events, not because you don’t care about them otherwise but more for the reason that everyone’s schedules are so hectic. You also get to meet people who’s music you’ve liked but haven’t had the chance to tell them like ‘James Blunt’. He was a really nice guy and I was disappointed he didn’t win but his time will surely come. There were many highlights to the evening but I thought ‘Miss Mary’ was sensational and also ‘Christina’ sang her beep off

One performance I particularly enjoyed was the ‘Knarls Barkley’ rendition of that song that everyone’s sick to death of. It was highly creative and showed just how good of a song it really is. I also thought he sang great.

So what’s been going on in my life? Well, family, family, family! That’s about it. Of course there’s been the odd show here and there speaking of which, S America was so much fun. I particularly enjoyed ‘Punta del Este’ in Uruguay, which turned out to be such a pleasant surprise. I cannot wait to get back and do a proper tour with the new album.

The new record is really shaping up and is turning out to be much of a dance record. This is something that I’ve always wanted to do seeing as most will say that dance is my background. Over the years I’ve somehow become more known for my ballads which I also love doing but dance music has always been close to my heart. Make no mistake, there will also be a killer ballad or three on this record but at this point in my life I really want to make something that is more dance directed.
So far, the songs that will surely be making it to the record are
‘SWOOSH’
‘SILENT’
‘WEDDING DAY
‘WHEN YOU RUN’
‘IVE BEEN ALMOST EVERYWHERE’
‘YOU AND ME’

I also feel that with the advent of technologies like the various online music stores, the days of listening to 12 track albums are somewhat behind us. That is not to say that no one enjoys this anymore but I’m speaking about the majority. I cannot tell you the last time I sat in front of my superfabuloso hifi and listened to one of my favorite albums in it’s entirety, there simply isn’t the time these days and I feel that this is pretty much the case for a lot of people. Also I believe that for too long, the public has been short changed with substandard albums meaning that too often, a fan has bought an album based on one or two hit singles that he or she has heard on the radio only to find that the album was full of fillers. Now of course, with the ability to preview tracks on ‘iTunes’ and buy them individually, what we are seeing is more and more people making what is essentially a compilation of their favorite tracks a bit like how albums used to be in the 50’s and early 60’s. It was only in the mid to late 60’s that the idea of a ‘concept album’ became popular with bands like ‘Zeppelin, Hendrix etc. In fact, the first and I believe biggest album by the ‘Beatles’ was a collection (compilation) of their hit singles which was pretty much the case with every artist until the concept album was born as I mentioned.

I also feel that it would be easier for me to retain a higher level of quality over lets say six songs as opposed to a twelve song album. I ask you, what would you rather listen to, twelve good songs with one or two of them being great or six great songs? Of course the advantage of putting out six great songs is that it would take me less time to make the record therefore, there would be a lot more offerings from me, consistently great music more frequently. What say you? I would really be interested to hear your thoughts.

Right now we are in the programming stage of the record. Today there is someone called ‘Chris Allen’ arriving from London and he will be adding his flavour to the songs thus far. Brain McCloud (drummer/programmer) has been truly excellent in what he has brought to the table and Bill Bottrell is in my opinion a genius. I am having a really good time making this record, there is an excitement in the studio a bit like the first record I made only this time with a lot more peacefulness.

I will be posting some photographs and flash movies from our sessions in the studio so standby. I am loving my photography more and more these days. Digital is where it’s at and there are so many exciting tools with which to express one’s feelings.

Charles is working hard to try and make the site better and to bring more of an emphasis to the photographic side of things. He’s trying to create a photo gallery that would provide exif data and also have the ability for you to leave comments. It’s the backend that is taking the time but once again, thank you for your patience.

I still have not been able or indeed had the time to look for ‘Togetherland’. If I do find it, it will not be available for download but I promise that I will definitely stream it. As I said before it has some good moments but for the most part it is inconsistent which sort of brings me back to a point I was making earlier.

Okay, that’s it for now guys. I really appreciate the time that everyone takes to contribute, I wish I could thank each and every one of you in person. Perhaps when I tour this summer I will get the chance to do just that with my voice. This is going to be a great year and touring a dance album is something I’m so looking forward to.

As always, ‘Love, Peace and family’

On our way to the Grammys with Charles as my date. The wife’s out of town so he was my next option. Haha

Seal Report

Hey Guys,

I am so sorry that I’ve been vacant for the past 2-3 weeks or so. Getting back into the grind of things here in LA has been all consuming. The wife and kids are in Germany and this has left me with my main focus being directed towards finishing my record. It is shaping up and so far I can tell you that it will be a dance record or at least the grooviest to date. There’s so much going on at the moment with a lot of changes occurring that it has been difficult to find the time to submit an in-depth ‘Seal Report’, however I will most likely find some time this weekend when I play in Phoenix. I apologize for not being able to answer your questions in my usual fashion but rest assured, I will give a more comprehensive account of what’s been going on professionally when I get a moment. Oh, Btw, the picture of the guitarist is Eric in the studio playing on ‘Swoosh!’ which is one of the songs on the album.

Speak soon,

At the base of ‘Buttermilk’, Shaun took time to sign for people who were happy to see him. He made them feel like he was their own hero. My great friend Thierry and his girlfriend Margaux are also here visiting from Switzerland. We all had a great day together, doing the thing that brought us all together in the first place…. snowboarding.

Seal Report

Hello everyone.

I’d like to start by apologizing for not posting this last week. Between paying attention to my family and having just a bit too much fun over the Xmas/New Year week, there hasn’t been much time to spend on the computer but better late than never right?

Well, I hope that all of you had a great Xmas and that the beginning to your New Year has been a smooth one thus far. I am still in the mountains and as I look out of the window, there is at least 1 ft of new snow so the ‘winter wonderland’ is still in major effect.

Lots of you have posted questions which I hope to get to as time permits but let me start by telling you my plans for this year and perhaps that will help answer some of the questions.

First on the Agenda is the record of course. Work on the new album is going really well and I’m in the lyric finalizing stages. Bill Bottrell (producer) is hard at work and so far the album has a definite dance feel to it. This has been my intention and I plan to follow it through because that is where my heart is right now. We are hoping for a release in time for summer so please bare with us as we try to do the very best possible.

It looks as though we will be doing some shows in South America this month, I will let you know by posting the dates to the website as soon as they are confirmed.
Without saying too much at this point, I hope to get back to South Africa to realize a reoccurring dream but more on that when the right time comes.
With regards to ‘Togetherland’, I will try and locate it and make it available for listening or at least the sections of it that I feel are worthy enough. I will never release it as an album to buy because my feeling is that it really isn’t that good. Sure there are moments in it that are definitively ‘seal’ but it is however wrought with inconsistency and this is the main reason why it wasn’t officially released in the first place.

I want to share with you a personal experience I had this Xmas that will remain as one of the highlights of my very fortunate life.
I had the good fortune to ride with someone who is widely regarded as the best snowboader in the world. Whilst we have been friends ever since he came to my last birthday party fresh from his gold medal Olympic run, I had never had the opportunity to actually go riding with Shaun White until this last week. Well after a few runs it becomes pretty obvious why this young man draws all the accolades that we’re used to hearing. He is in a word….A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

To follow him on simple runs is like an education not only in snowboarding but also in God given balance and coordination. You quickly get the impression that he is more comfortable on a board than you are on two feet. He is to this sport what ‘Roger Federer’ is to tennis in that they are both operating on a different stratosphere when it comes to playing and are both consummate professionals. But what is probably the most amazing thing about Shaun is the way in which he carries himself as a role model and an ambassador for all of sport. You cannot imagine how many times he was asked for his autograph on yet another young kids board or sleeve not to mention the numerous adults and parents that asked for autographs for their kids at home, quite often the same parent coming back more than once. He never once denied a single person and seemed to have time for everyone. Its clear why the whole world, (myself included), is enamored by this young man, he gets it, the complete package, the whole kit and caboodle, he’s
the perfect Rock star!

• I use an iPod nano 8Gig. I never have more than four playlists on it plus tracks that I’m working on
• I can’t really comment on your question about “ bypassing the record company and offering downloads straight from my website”. I will say though that I feel artists and the record buying public have had the short end of the stick for many years and that the digital revolution and copyright violation, although dishonest, have brought about a much needed change in the way that business has been conducted. I am pro change and I also think that the Internet promotes freedom among artist to express themselves.
• I do arrange my backing vocals, sometimes with the help of the producer but I pretty much have a general idea of how I want them to sound
• Hallo Dean, thanks for liking my songs
• I loved working with Mark Batson. He was great at coming up with parts. I feel that he’s an extremely talented musician. I learned a great deal from him

• I’ve often been asked to do a video for the song ‘touch’ however I feel that the time has now passed and I must concentrate no the new record but you never know. Perhaps sometime in the future when compiling a ‘Best of’ this may be an option
• Happy belated birthday Pamora.
• I will hopefully get to Atlanta on the next US tour. There was some talk of Sade and I touring at one point but for some reason it just didn’t happen
• The camera I use for the blog pictures is a ‘Sony DSC T10’. The one’s I use for the slide shows are A Nikon D200 and a Leica M8. For the blog I sometimes use an HTC Excalibur camera phone

I must really sign off now but I want to once again thank everyone for being patient and contributing to what is becoming a great place to meet and communicate. Happy New Year,
