Greetings Mr. Seal. I left you this comment before and then lost my previous email address. SO I don’t know whether you responded or not. So I’m re-sending you this comment in case you found it interesting. But as you probably read before this is a story about how God used you to convey a personal message to me in response to a prayer that I said years ago. Maybe you’ll find it interesting. I remember reading somewhere that you notice that people get different meanings of your songs. Well, consider the meaning that I got from one of your songfs as you read the following sentiments:

NOW THAT YOUR ROSE IS IN BLOOM
    A LIGHT HITS THE GLOOM

My life verse is James, chapter 1, verses 2 and 3. This is a brief passage of scripture that was divinely used to communicate to me a message from God, himself. The scriptures read this way: “Brothers are you going through struggles? Is your life full of problems and difficulties? Well be happy, because when the way is rough, this provides a chance for your patience to grow. So, don’t try to squirm out of your problems. Let it grow. Because when your patience has reached full bloom, you will be competent, strong in character, ready for anything.” The key word in this passage is “bloom”.
When I was thirteen-years old I said a prayer to God that has had more of an effect on my life than I could ever imagine. I remember asking God to search through and examine me. I asked him to see if there was any goodness in me, and if he were to find it, to nourish it and make it grow just as a plant is watered, nourished and made to grow. Subsequent to this prayer immense tribulation entered into my life. After eight years of unrelenting stress, at the age of twenty-one I attended a religious function and got hold of a religious publication. As I was reading I received a revelation. During that point in my life I had forgotten all about the request I made to God for goodness. However as I was reading my eyes came across the last sentence of this particular paragraph that consisted of these printed words: “ And there has been “goodness” found in you.” Those words automatically reminded me of the prayer that I said 8 years prior to this event. Contact with God is not something that can be verified or confirmed by human analysis. It can be illustrated this way: Say that you were to have a dream about the house that you live in. In your dream your house is blue. But in actuality your house is brick. But your dream just tells you that this is the house that you live in. In this same way I just knew that God was giving me a reminder. Contact with him is a highly personal experience.
A little while after this event I happened to be in Manhattan , N.Y. and I met the musical artist known as Seal. I spoke to him and he briefly greeted me. The next day I happened to be fumbling through some CD’s and happened to come across one of Seal’s CD’s. If I hadn’t met him the day before I wouldn’t have normally listened to his music. But something inspired me to do so. The song that I was listening to was called “Kiss from a Rose”. And when I heard the words “Now that your rose is in bloom a light hits the gloom on the gray” all I could think of was “destiny”. Just as a rose, when it is in bloom, slowly and beautifully unravels as its pedals form a person reaches the point in their lives when he/she comes to fruition. He understands his purpose, knows who he is and realizes that his experiences in life, whether good or bad, were all part of his growth into maturity and discovery of himself. Obscurity, depression, and gloom fade away. It was as if God was telling me that I was at that point.
A few months after receiving this concept I asked God for confirmation. I needed to know whether or not these thoughts were truly divine revelation or if they were thoughts that I had conjured up as a result of coincidence and “wishful thinking”. At this precise moment I happened to be at the Marin Luther King Jr. Library in Washington D.C. And a mere moment after saying “Amen”, I picked up a certain translation of the bible and without putting any thought into it, opened directly to James chapter 1 and began reading verses 2 and 3 which read this way: “Brothers are you going through struggles? Is your life full of problems and difficulties? Well be happy, because when the way is rough this provides a chance for your patience to grow. So, let it grow. Because when it has reached full “BLOOM” you will be competent, strong in character, ready for anything.” After reading that, I closed the book and thought to myself, “this is no coincidence”. And I also realized that what was coming to full bloom was my character, the goodness. Goodness is a combination of many good qualities. I understood that the rose was symbolic of my character reaching the point that God wants it to be. The scripture says, “ let your “patience” come to full bloom”. So I completely grasped the meaning of the words, “now that your rose is in bloom a light hits the gloom.” In order for growth to be possible rain, which is a word often used to illustrate trial and tribulation, is necessary. As the Apostle Paul said, “ My strength has been made perfect in weakness”. In order for gold to be refined it must go through the fire. In the bible Job said, “ I go east but he is not there. I go west, but I cannot find him. I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I turn to the south, and I cannot find him. But he knows where I am going. And after he had tested me out I shall come forth like pure gold refined through the fire.” As the bible says in Romans 5:3-5: “More than that we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” So after building character and endurance we have “hope” as the scripture says. Hope is a cousin to the word trust. In this context the word hope is being used in the sense of the word “trust”. Once one is trained by trial and experiences deliverance and realizes the goodness that comes out of it, he/she has a refined trust in God, knowing that no situation is insurmountable to God. And if God is for them, who can be against them?
In conclusion, I don’t know why God has lead me down the paths that he has, and has used the avenues that he has to increase my character and bring me to the point that I am in life. However, now that my rose is in bloom, I joyfully anticipate what he will do next.

Had to leave one more comment. I not only saw you at the Borgata last tour, but also was able to see you the week later at Hammerstein Ballroom. Front row center stage. It was awsome. I was on cloud nine. Im sure you dont remember me, Id like to think you do… hehe, but I was the woman with the rose. I brought a rose for you. I had it up in the air and you were singing right in front of me but wouldnt take it from me. I was so nervious I threw it up on the stage…. the minute it landed the security took it. I was so heartbroken…. He later came back to me and said I should have waited because you were about to sing Kiss from a rose. I just wasnt sure if you were going to sing it… I joked and asked him for it back,,, he said NO!

  10. tgericke says:

Dear Seal, I am so excited that I can actually communicate with you. Im sure you hear this all the time, I am so your biggest fan. lol I loved your music from the very first album. I did get to see you live at the Borgata your last tour. Which I loved you so, but whats up with us not being able to get up and dance at the stage, I was told to go back to my seat, and stay there. I have tickets to see you at the Borgata on May 18, , will it be the same? Please advise.

  11. Borges Novela says:

I was readin’ some of the comments above, and I agree with some of them. You know Seal. I am a christian and in the bible there’s a story of king Saul who was sometimes atormented by a bad spirit. David had to play the harp, and then the king was calm once again. I confess, I have only one album “Best 1991-2004″ with two cd’s.
This cd was given to me as birthday present, And I believe that I’m only one who owns it all around Maputo. I’m so addicted to it, that I can’t sleep without listening to it. And of cause, your lyrics are powerfull,
I became your fan in 1998 when I was 16 years old. When I heard “Kiss from a rose” on the radio station. And that is the only one song the radio stations have in maputo, let me tell you. kiss from a rose is the only song played since then.
Paul Trigve, a friend of mine from Norway who is missionary. He asked me in 2005 when he heard “kiss from a rose” on my computer at work, and said, do you like that singer? And I said yes. I really had forgoten about it. He bought it for me this current year in South Africa.

So I enjoy listening to it, And it is a blessing

  21. Maggie says:

Dear Seal and Seal Fan Family Here..

I need to just share what happened in my life today.

I recently started a new job in the Neuro Trauma unit and I witnessed something today that I believe changed my life.

I saw someone pass away this morning. The clocks didn’t stop. Traffic didn’t stop here or in Japan or in the United States..The war didn’t stop. No one was by this patient’s side when she passed. No family, just the machines that beeped and hummed, the hands of a doctor and nurses that couldn’t, even with all our technology, save this woman. Within the mere seconds of her passing, the hospital chimed “Rock-A-Bye Baby” as it always does when new life is born.
I walked away so heavy hearted. The moment was so real, so sad yet so cycle like. I can’t describe it. I took my mp3 and my cigarettes and I went outside. I listened to you and “Don’t Cry” and I cried. I cried for a woman I never knew and this new baby that had just been born. Sometimes we get in a rush and the we tend to let the world in to our lives too much sometimes. I realized how much the lyrics of your music heal and touch and impact lives at random and I have to say that I’m so grateful for your respect to listening ears. So much responsibility we have to choose our words and our tone inflection. Thank you for being there for me once again. I love you for that.

    Maggie

Seal – great news. I am definitely looking forward to hearing raw one-take acoustic versions of some new stuff. As I’ve said before, Deep Water (acoustic) has a very special place in my heart, and something I find very special about your work (especially with the first album) is that the songs are strong enough to be heard in multiple versions – like Whirlpool in the regular, rock/live and acoustic versions. Each one seems like a definitive version…

  44. Janet says:

What about a black leather cd cover with and image of you embossed in the center? J:O)

  45. Janet says:

“LEATHER…SWOON…:O)” Are you going to make a totally new cover for this album? It would be cool to see the sketches if you do.

ooow, I can’t wait now… I am like a kid who can smell the chocolate chip cookies cooling on the window sil. but has been told to wait until they are ready:O) I wanna sneak a peak at em’…I know…behave hahaha!
    Thanks for the taste!

You really do look good in leather by the way, Janet:O)

  46. Kristin says:

I agree with Brian, your acoustic work is wonderful to hear too. I enjoy the focus on your voice. My absolute favorite acoustic is “Love’s Divine” – such a gorgeous version of a beautiful song. So please do post those acoustic songs!

Played “Swoosh” again, liking it even more now – very catchy! I look forward to hearing it on the radio, so I can smugly say, “I heard that song as it was in process…” hehehe.

Seal, I know you are a Joni Mitchell fan. Have you ever watched “Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind”? It is an excellent documentary about her career and life. I thought of you as I listened to how she approaches songwriting, and where the songs came from emotionally. If you like Joni Mitchell, you should really check out the DVD.

As much as I love your fully produced work, I’m always thrilled to be able to get to the true heart of your work via acoustic arrangements. Looking forward to what promises to be an interesting listening experience!

    Cheers,
    Brian

  50. Timo says:

Excellent! Looking forward for those acoustic ones… Isn’t this really great that we have this internet nowadays…This would’ve been quite impossible some times ago…

I already mentioned this some days ago, but it kinda got lost in the other comments…

    About the coming music videos:
You’ve had a good point not to add lyrics to you albums, because everyone understands the songs in their individual way. I’ve personally have found this to be true, often I think that the song tells about something totally different thing than it actually does after reading the lyrics.
Then the next surprise is often the video: it might be SO different from your personal feelings, that you don’t even like it.

Have you considered about asking us fans our feelings and thoughts about the song before making a video? It might be really interesting to see how different thoughts would arise from different people!

    Timo
