Working Out ‘Swoosh!’

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.seal.com/wp-content/plugins/embedded-video/flash_flv_player/flvplayer.swf" height="240" width="320" fvars=" file = http://media.seal.com/uploads/workingout.flv " /]

This is a snippet of what we are working on in the studio for the record. As you can hear, there aren’t final lyrics by any stretch of imagination but I just wanted to share with you all a unique insight in the writing/creative process of a song. The most important part to me has always been the vowels and how they sound within the context of the song. If the ’sounds/vowels’ are right then the lyrics will almost tell you what they’re supposed to be about. I find that this is the most effective and enjoyable way to write a song, sort of ‘doing without doing’.
Hope you enjoy,
S.

Hey, hey, what’s this?!?! A sneak peek at “Swoosh” in process! Wow…what a treat. It is so nice to hear your voice, singing! The song sounds great, by the way.

Seems like an interesting process, that song-writing stuff. I helped an ex-boyfriend write a song or 2, ages ago – they weren’t very good though ;-) I can only imagine what goes into crafting a smash hit!

Have you ever written a song where it just came to you very easily and quickly? If so, which ones? Chris Isaak said in an interview that he wrote one of his hits (”Somebody’s Crying”, I think) in a closet while he was at a party. He had just broken up with someone and wasn’t in the party mood, so he grabbed a guitar and hid!

Have you ever written a song in odd circumstances or in an unusual setting?

  5. IowaHawkKurt says:

Seal, getting to see a sneak peak at the creative process behind your amazing music is just spectacular. I can not wait for this next album, and I know that I will cherish it just as much as any of your past albums. Much love and support to your family and thanks again for letting us into your inspiring musical life.

    Fantastic !!

I never knew about setting up the vowels in a song first…

When Dean read that, he said “You mean a e i o u ?” He then proceded to write out all the letters and started strumming his guitar and singing “AAAAA EEEEE IIIII OOOOOO UUUUU.”
You are teaching that kid of mine to write songs now….COOL!

OMG, I absolutely LOVE the clip and can’t wait to hear the final version! The world is in desperate need of a new SEAL album. I keep IV loaded in the individual CD chamber of my car so that it doesn’t get switched out when I am updating the 6 CD changer. And, without fail, whenever someone new is riding in my car, after a few songs they say “Oh, who’s this?” They all love the CD, and your music, without even knowing it! Ha Ha! But now, they know!

Keep the snippets coming. We’d all love to hear. And don’t forget to add Chicago to your tour! Hopefully a cool, more initimate venue like HOB or Chicago Theater. The Arie Crown is also nice, but not too big!

    Can’t wait!!!!

Hi Seal, god this is turning into such a great song. If you’d like to post a high-res version so we can all enjoy it, I’d be honored if you wanted to send it to me for posting on Dovetail.tv. We’re all about independent films, and I think it would be a great home for the kind of behind the scenes stuff you’re shooting.

I’ve been a fan for a long time, and remember in particular a completely magical time at the Greek Theater in Berkeley when you played. That was a long time ago, and your music just keeps getting deeper and more personal. I love it all.

  48. Greetings from New York City. Thank you for this blog and for the insight into your creative process. As a session vocalist and songwriter myself, I always find it interesting how other musicians work, what their process is, and how their songs are born. I laughed out loud during the other video where your guitarist asked the engineer what had changed in the track and she replied “I haven’t touched a thing!”… when we’re in the booth, we’re all the same, lol. Looking forward to hearing (and seeing) more of your journey through these new compositions, and thanks again for this window into your world. Next time you’re in the city, the coffee’s on me. Peace, love and music always, daniel
